This is where the first scene will be taking place with The Mercenary and The Bear. This was a set that I essentially built up from scratch. I cleared out my entire bedroom, purchased a very cheap dining room set and an old radio. However, since I set this up, there are more props that will be included in this scene - plates and cutlery (undecided).
Pros - - Controlled environment - Very little chance to encounter problems - The lights I will be using run on batteries Cons - - Will be difficult to light effectively as it's such a small room - May suffer a power outage |
This is the location where the second scene will commence, with The Gangster in the car. This is a remote parking lot at the back-end of Devizes, Wiltshire that myself and my Grandad arranged to use. It's important to not that we will also be using his car, which is where the action of the scene takes place.
Pros - - Relatively controlled environment - Very quiet - Accessible all night Cons - - Prop guns on set, need to be selective about when they're on-show in a public location. |
This tree is where I will be shooting the fourth story with The Preacher. This is a quiet area at the back corner of a casual dog-walking spot in the middle of my home town. Whilst it is a quiet place, it is directly next to a main road which will not only cause audio problems, in which I will likely have to dub over in Post Production, but we will have two gun props in this scene as well as the bear, which is going to be majorly problematic.
Pros - - No lighting required - Relatively quiet Cons - - Two prop guns on set for extensive time, need to be very careful when they're on show - Directly next to a main road, audio quality will be terrible so I will have to dub the lines |
(I lost the photos from the recce so I'm using a photo from the middle of production)
This is where the final scene will take place with The Mercenary and the bear, in a good friend's garage. Pros - - Controlled environment - short shoot, minimising factors that can go wrong. - Only one actor needed Cons - - Garage door will be left open late at night with a lot of noise. - Garage is a little cluttered, could be difficult to light. |
This is The Mercenary's costume. This design is intended to make him look enigmatic, somewhat uncomfortable and quirky, which compliments his purposely stiff performance. The Stenson is a nod to cowboys of the classic western, but draped in modern materials to personify the evolution of the genre through this film. The sunglasses, bandage on his nose and toothpick are all cherrypicked from films I looked into - Drive and Chinatown in particular. The black leather jacket creates a real toughened, rugged look in comparison with the hat and the glasses, complimenting his mercenary background. He also reclaims the bear with a bandage wrapped round his stomach covered in blood, following being shot in the first scene. The black colour motif is intended to help the lighting to nicely bounce off of the material well, adding texture to the frame.

This is The Gangster's costume. Again, taking inspiration from Chinatown, he wears a blue pinstriped, a nod to the repeated blue colour motif across the film that conveys mystery in the same way Blue Velvet does. He wears a fedora that resembles Jack Nicholson's character in Chinatown. He also wears black gloves. Together, it compiles into a very Noir-ish, 40's gangster look.

This is The Driver's costume (Preacher in disguise). This costume needed to feel cluttered and thrown together, because we hear in the first few minutes that a number of serial murders are taking place in an Uber, and so when the second scene rolls around, he needs to have taken every possible measure to secure his identity, hence the all black clothing, aviator glasses, bandana and cap, because when compared with his actual identity as this lunatic Preacher, the two figures look completely different in almost every possible way. Throughout this scene, he also wears his ACTUAL glasses underneath the aviator glasses so that when he takes his hood down and his facial clothing off at the end of the scene, he looks like a wispy old man, as opposed to this sinister serial killer.

This is The Preacher's costume. His hair is tied back to evoke "redneck" hairstyle in keeping with this character archetype that can be found in many classic westerns. He wears glasses to do much the same, he's a Preacher, so he does a lot of reading. His costume is all black with white braces, representing the small glimmer of purity that his title as a Preacher holds on the surface, completely encompassed by the darker, twisted side.
